Last week, Ecuador's highest court issued a ruling, legalizing same-sex marriage in the South American country. While same-sex couples have been allowed to enter into civil unions in Ecuador for a decade, they still lacked some rights bestowed upon married people. While the decision pushed gay rights one step further, there are still many places in the world where it's difficult — and in some cases illegal — to be out.
Around the world, people are under attack for who they love, how they dress, and ultimately for who they are. In too many countries, being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex LGBTI means living with daily discrimination. Religious admonitions against sexual relations between same-sex individuals particularly men long stigmatized such behaviour, but most legal codes in Europe were silent on the subject of homosexuality. Human Rights Watch works for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender peoples' rights, and with activists representing a multiplicity of identities and issues.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has said the act does guarantee the protections. But the Trump administration has taken the opposite position, saying that the landmark legislation that outlawed discrimination based on race, religion, national origin and, notably, sex, cannot fairly be read to apply to discrimination based on sexual orientation or transgender status.
